The Importance of Google for Search Engine Optimization
When youre optimizing your web site with SEO techniques, you may wonder which search engines are more important. If you have a small SEO budget and not a lot of time to work on your optimization efforts, you may want to choose just one or two of the more popular search engines and work on optimizing your site so that those search engines index and rank your site. Google has become the most widely-used search engine particularly because of the other services Google provides. In addition to performing searches for information, you can search the web for images, look at satellite maps with Google Earth, search through the text of scholarly articles with Google Scholar, and make your life a bit easier by using all of the other tools provided by Google. Optimizing your web site for Google can also help you get ranked with some of the smaller search engines since youll need to follow SEO rules carefully to have a chance of being ranked by Googles search engine.
Google PageRank
Google PageRank (PR) is an indicator that can be very important for search engine optimization professionals and internet marketers. In simple terms, the PR of a web site shows the sites importance. Google bases this indicator on the number of links to and from a web site and uses a mathematical formula to determine each sites PR. One-way links are still important, but PageRank also takes into account the quality of the links to your site. This method of determining web site importance considers a link to your web site as a vote for how important or relevant your site is. If a web site that links to your site has a Google PR of 7 and has 100 outgoing links, this may help your PageRank. However, a site with a lower PR of 5 and only 5 outgoing links will have a more positive effect on your PR. If a site only has 5 outgoing links, Google assumes that your web site must be important if they used one out of only five link spaces to link to your site. You can check your PageRank using an online tool called PR Checker. If you find that you have a low PR, you can try to boost your PR number by having one-way links to your site placed on other sites with few links and a decent PR number.
The Sandbox Effect
Google has had such an effect on how pages are indexed in ranked that a sandbox effect seems to have been created. This effect refers to the waiting period for new web sites to be ranked by Google. This waiting period seems to be approximately three to four months; long enough for Google to see if the site is able to survive while waiting for rankings. This effect can change how your site is ranked and how long it takes to see results from your SEO campaigns. You can learn how this works and do some things that help reduce this waiting period for you. If you have a business relationship with anyone who has a web site that has been around for some time, try to have that person link to your web site. Google looks to these more mature and stable web sites to see where they are linking so you can help yourself by generating links from web sites that have been in existence for some time. |
