SEO: What Techniques to Use and What to Avoid

Search engine optimization can be a long and complicated process.  SEO methods must be implemented and tracked and changes must be made to accommodate changes in how search engines search for and index information.  Throughout this process, there are some things that should be avoided and some techniques that must be used to ensure success.  Knowing this information can help you avoid setbacks and progress toward SEO success for your Web site.

Pick the Right Keywords

When you are selecting keywords, be sure to research them thoroughly before you make your selections.  Using the right keywords is one of the most important things you can do to help your SEO efforts bring you success.  Pick the wrong keywords and you can find yourself with no Web traffic and no sales.

Add Content to Your Web Site

Having relevant content on your Web site is one of the most important things you can do to make the Web site both useful for visitors and useful in terms of search engine optimization.  Providing useful and relevant content can help you retain visitors longer so that they can see your sales message and have the opportunity to respond by requesting more information or making a purchase.  Keyword-rich content also helps you optimize your site so that you can improve your search engine rankings and drive even more targeted traffic to your site.

Build Links to Your Site

Building links to your site is one of the best ways to optimize it for the search engines.  Search engines crawlers follow links around the Web so you can see why it would be beneficial to have links to your site on other Web sites.  These links should be on reputable sites that relate to your business in some way to ensure that they are high in quality.

Avoid Link Farms or Exchanges

Link farms were set up to allow people to submit links to their Web site to try to boost their Web traffic and their search engine rankings.  These link farms can actually harm your SEO efforts because you reduce the quality of your links when you place them on a link farm that accepts a link from anyone.  Even worse, your link could end up next to questionable material and potential visitors could associate you with that material and avoid your site.

Consult Your SEO Firm Before Making Changes

SEO is a carefully planned process that must be tracked and adjusted as needed.  Before you make any changes to your Web site, ask someone at your SEO consulting firm if it will have an impact on your SEO.  You don’t want to make changes that harm your efforts.  Some of these changes include removing content, changing links, modifying the design, changing the page titles, and using more graphics on your site.  Knowing what to do and what to avoid when you’re optimizing your Web site will help you to get the most for your money and get you the best SEO results.
