Spam Rules and Search Engine Optimization

Optimizing your Web site for the search engines is an important process that is needed if you want people to be able to find your site and buy your products and services.  This process contains many different components, all of which come together as a whole to produce an optimized Web site with improved functionality.  When you are optimizing your Web site, you need to be aware of the rules and regulations you have to follow.  Some of the rules you need to know about involve spamming the search engines.  Spamming is not allowed and may even get your site banned from the search engines, so knowing how to avoid spamming during your SEO campaign can keep you from doing anything to harm your results.

Search Engine and Directory Submission

When you submit your site to the search engines and directories on the Web, you are trying to get these sites to visit your Web site and index your content.  You can and should submit your site to each directory regularly, but submitting multiple times in a relatively short time can be considered spam.  Instead of doing this, come up with a reasonable schedule for submission so that you can be sure to reap the benefits while avoiding the possible pitfalls.

Artificially Improving Link Popularity

Link farms are Web sites that accept links from pretty much any Web site owner who is trying to improve the link popularity of a Web site or group of sites.  Since link farms do not discriminate on the basis of quality or content, submitting your link to this type of site can really negate the efforts you’ve been making to optimize your site.  What’s worse, some search engines may ban you because link farms artificially inflate the number of links you have on the Web.  Instead of using link farms and risking your site’s future, use other methods for link building to ensure that you have high quality links.

Keyword Spamming

Using keywords in your content is one of the best ways to optimize your site, but spamming people with your keywords can get you blacklisted by the search engines.  Keyword spamming is when you stuff your keywords into your content as many times as possible without regard for the effect on the readability of the content.  Some people even use hidden text to get their keywords noticed by the search engines without visitors having to read the keyword lists.  Instead of doing this, place your keywords strategically and make sure they fit naturally within your content so readers do not get discouraged and leave your site.  Even though SEO is important, you don’t want to do anything that will make it difficult for visitors to access and understand your information.

Understanding what spam is and how to avoid it in terms of optimizing your Web site can help you to have a more successful search engine optimization campaign that gets better results without using questionable SEO methods.
