Understanding Search Engines

When you optimize your Web site for the search engines, you are making it easier for search engine crawlers to find your site and index their information so that it can be returned to users who perform searches for specific words and phrases.  Some of the components of SEO include link building, content development, and improving the layout of your Web site to match the principles of SEO.  Before you can do all of this successfully, you must understand how the search engines work so you can get a better understanding of what needs to be done to optimize your Web site and achieve the best results.

Types of Search Engines

There are two major types of search engines on the Web.  Search engines can either be crawler-based or managed by humans.  Crawler-based search engines use automated software programs to crawl the Web looking for information.  These crawlers follow links and visit Web sites looking for information that can be indexed.  When a crawler finds information, it indexes it in the search engine database and makes it available for when search engine users perform a search using words and phrases relevant to that information.  Human search engines do not rely on crawlers to find Web sites and information.  Instead, they rely on humans to review submissions and index content accordingly.

The Search Process

When people perform a search for information using a search engine, they do the search using specific words and phrases called keywords.  When the search is performed, you may think that the search engine is giving you information right from the Web, but it is actually returning results that have been indexed in the search engine database.  The search engines try to return the most relevant information for your search, but the results can depend upon the design and optimization of Web sites using the keywords you used to perform your search.


Varying Search Engine Results

If you use more than one search engine to look for information, you may notice that each search engine returns different results or has some of the same results in a different order.  This is because of differences in the way these search engines find and index information.  Some search engines search more frequently so the information they return for your search may be more current or relevant to what you’re looking for.  Search engines vary in how often they look for information, how it is index, and how it is ranked in the results.
