Using Your Domain Name as an SEO Tool

When you’re working to optimize your site for the search engines, you’ll need to use every available tool to improve your chances of being ranked well in the search engines and make your site a more useful place for visitors.  Some of the most common SEO tools are links, site content, titles, image tags, site maps, and other SEO techniques.  One of the lesser-known tools you can use to optimize your Web site is your domain name.  Knowing how to use this tool can help you to fully optimize your Web site and achieve the best possible efforts from your time and money.

Domain Name

A domain name is simply the address that points people to your Web site.  A simple example would be www.google.com.  When you type this into the address bar of your browser, you are taken to Google’s Web site.

Choosing a Domain Name

You should choose your domain name based on several factors.  One is by choosing a domain name that is easy to remember and easy to spell so that people do not have a hard time finding your Web site.  You should try to use keywords in your domain name so you can further optimize your Web site.  The keywords you use should be carefully researched and implemented to help you optimize your Web site more successfully.  Your domain name should reflect the type of business you run and it should also be short enough to help people remember how to find your business.  Choosing the right domain name can be critical in helping people find your business and in optimizing your Web site for the search engines.

Free Web Hosts and Domain Names

If you’re considering using a free domain name that is linked to a Web host or another company, rethink your decision.  There are two major reasons to avoid using this type of domain.  One is that you want to have the most professional image possible.  Having your own domain name shows that you are a professional company.  Sharing your domain or using a free Web host can communicate that your business has not been successful enough to afford purchasing your own unique domain name and a hosting package.  The other is that you will not be able to effectively optimize a site that is owned or managed by a free hosting company.  This defeats the whole purpose of using your domain name as an SEO tool.

Avoiding Domain Name Pitfalls

There are several pitfalls to avoid when choosing your domain and using it as an SEO tool.  One is to be sure that the keywords you use are not misleading or nondescript.  You want people to know exactly what kind of site they will be visiting.  You should also make sure you avoid clever spellings even if you like the idea.  Some people may not be able to find your Web site because they are using the traditional spelling instead of a clever spelling you came up with.  You should also avoid using your company name as a domain unless you are an established company with a loyal following.
